I'm Scott, a Web Developer

I've mostly focused on WordPress building clean, custom and functional websites. I freelanced for a mix of private clients and marketing agencies for around 5 years. In 2022 I took a career break to enjoy life as a full-time dad. I'm now excited to dive back into web development.

A little more about me

As I became a full-time dad in 2022, some of my work may not appear online anymore. My work that’s still out there will be added to my projects with a write up. Here’s a brief list of some of the things I was most proud of:

  • I built a fully bespoke book review website using Custom Post Types, AJAX calls to the Openlibrary book API using user entered ISBN numbers, and a custom WordPress plugin I developed to add star rating functionality to posts within the Custom Post Type.
  • Developed a fully bespoke WordPress theme for an established London designer/branding expert. It included Custom Post Types, custom page templates, in-depth CSS work including CSS grid and vanilla Javascript along with Greensock’s GSAP for animations.
  • Developed a custom WordPress plugin to add timeslot selection to a client’s WooCommerce store for deliveries, along with various other projects ranging from creating shortcodes to troubleshooting non-working functionality.

Before I started building websites I worked in Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance in the insurance industry – experience that instilled a deeply meticulous and problem solving approach to work. I needed to feel like I was actually creating or building something and web development fit perfectly as I had learned a little during my Games Art and Design degree years before.

You might wonder why I chose to work self-employed. I had picked up a little web development work on the side while working in the insurance industry and because of that I had referrals for more work. With family members that had been self-employed for decades it felt fairly natural to walk into that.

During my self-employed years I worked on a number of highly bespoke projects ranging from custom WordPress themes built from the ground up to a couple of custom WordPress plugins. I may recreate those as portfolio pieces and pop them into my projects with a write-up.

While I’ve been content working by myself, collaborating with designers and clients, I do appreciate and relish the advantages a team can offer. I’m keen to work in an environment with other people where I can contribute to work that’s bigger than myself, but also with people I can learn from and can help me grow.

Simple To Do app

TL;DR Similar to my simple calculator web app, a To Do app I’ve seen pop up on a lot of lists of things to build. I use Google Keep extensively for lists on a daily basis so I figured it’d be a fun thing to make. As I like Google Keep’s functionality I decided to […]

Simple Calculator

TL;DR It had been a while since I’d written any serious code, and although I have tried to keep up to date on any changes in web development while I’ve been parenting my son, I wanted to build a few things. Over the years I’ve looked at several lists of projects to build as part […]

Akcela

TL;DR I was put in touch with Akcela through a marketing agency I had worked with. It was a complete redesign and rebuilt of their website, working with a designer they had hired. It’s a modern, mobile-first entirely custom WordPress theme built from the ground up; their website has been live since 2021 showing my […]
